What are flanges?
Flanges are typically projecting ridges or rims designed to enhance strength or distribute loads on elements. How do I choose the best flanges?
You must consider some important factors beyond the type when choosing the ideal flange for your application. There are several factors to consider, such as the size, the pressure class, and the material.
Choose a size: In order to select the right flange size, you need to consult ANSI/ASME standards. This specification provides information about the flange sizing based on the pipe diameter. Tolerances and specifications for flange gaskets and fastenings are often included in these documents.
Choosing a material: It is typically advised to utilize a flange made of the same material or at the least, a compatible alloy as the pipes and fittings that will be connected to it. For instance, zirconium or titanium flanges would be the optimum option in the case of titanium pipes.
The theory is that the materials’ chemical makeup does not result in undesirable reactions, especially when they come into touch with process fluids. For the requirements and specifications of the materials, ASTM standards are applicable. For simple material identification, ASTM standards provide a grade, and they give a percentage-based breakdown of the chemical makeup.
The A105, A182, and A350 ASTM requirements are frequently used for flanges. The ASTM standard provides requirements like B363 and B381 for titanium flanges.
